Help Prevent a Frozen Pipe Nightmare

Homeowners throughout New York are aware of the problems cold weather can cause on their plumbing systems – frozen pipes are no laughing matter! So as the temperatures start dropping, we’d like to help our customers prevent frozen or burst pipes in the winter. Here are some tips that may come in handy!

Always keep the heat on

If you’re leaving for a period of time during the winter make sure the heat stays on! Although it may seem less cost-efficient to heat a space that isn’t occupied, it’ll cost much less than it would to repair the damage caused by a frozen pipe! Keeping the heat set above 55 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal to help prevent water damage due to frozen pipes.

Let faucets drip

Allowing a faucet to remain open by letting it drip will relieve pressure in the system. If a pipe freezes, it’s the pressure created between the ice and the faucet that causes a burst pipe. Letting the faucet drip will prevent the pressure build up, helping to keep the pipe from bursting.

Use heat from the home

If your pipes are located in cabinets or in closets, keep the doors open to allow heat from the rest of the home to reach the pipes. Also, leave interior doors open to allow heat to travel from room to room.

Seal up cracks and holes

Use caulk in any holes both inside and outside located near pipes. This can help keep cold air out and warm air in, lowering the risk of freezing pipes.

Add extra insulation

More often than not, pipes are located in areas that do not have proper insulation, such as basements, crawl spaces or attics, and they may need extra insulation to help prevent freezing. Pipes can be fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease the chance of freezing. Additional insulation can also be added to walls and ceilings to keep pipes warm as well!
